Who is Hızır?

Information about Hızır in verses of Quran and hadiths…

Hızır is the person who lived in the time of Moses and who was taught divine knowledge and wisdom. The word appearing in Arabic resources as hadır (hard, hıdr) and accepted as having an Arabic origin is used as Hızır and Hıdır in Turkish.

Hadır has a synonym meaning with the word ahdar which means ‘green, a place with lots of greens’. From this point of view, it can be said that the word ‘hadır’ is accepted as a nickname and an adjective rather than a proper name. Thus, some resources state that Hızır was given this name since grass became green and flourished under him when he sat on a dry ground (Buhari, Enbiya, 29) and everywhere he stepped on became green for he drank from the fountain of heaven (Maksidi, III, 78).
